Skylight Services in Connecticut

Most calls are one of three things: a room that needs daylight, an old skylight that fogged or started leaking, or a roof replacement where the skylights should be swapped at the same time. Here is what we install.

New Skylight Installation

Cutting a new opening in the roof, then framing, flashing and finishing it. We handle the roof side and the interior light shaft, and we tell you up front whether the rafters and the room make it a good spot.

Skylight Replacement

Fogged glass, a yellowed dome, or a unit that leaks at the curb. We remove the old skylight, rebuild the flashing and set a new unit in its place, VELUX unless you have another brand in mind.

Solar and Vented Skylights

VELUX solar-powered venting skylights open and close on a remote and shut themselves when the rain sensor gets wet. Fresh air in a bathroom or kitchen without running a wire.

Skylights With a Roof Replacement

If the roof is coming off anyway, that is the cheapest day to replace the skylights. The flashing gets built into the new roof instead of cut into an old one, and one warranty covers the whole assembly.

Flashing and Curb Work

Most skylight leaks are flashing leaks. Every install gets the VELUX flashing kit, ice-and-water shield lapped up the curb, and underlayment tied into the roof, whether we did that roof or someone else did.

Sun Tunnels

A VELUX Sun Tunnel is a small dome on the roof and a reflective tube down to a ceiling diffuser. It brings daylight into a hallway, closet or bathroom with no framing change and no light shaft, usually in half a day.

Why a Roofer Should Install Your Skylight

A skylight is a hole in your roof with a window in it. The window is the easy part. What keeps it dry is the roof work around it, and that is work a handyman or a window company does not do every day.

Flashing That Matches the Roof

Step flashing up the sides, a saddle above, the apron below, all woven into the shingle courses. It is the same detail we do around chimneys on every roof we install.

Ice-and-Water Shield at the Opening

Connecticut ice dams push water uphill. We wrap the opening in ice-and-water membrane before the flashing goes on, so a bad February does not end up on your ceiling.

The VELUX Skylight Line

VELUX is our preferred line. The flashing kits are engineered for the units and the warranties are worth something. If you already have another brand picked out, we will install that too. Here is how the choices break down.

Choosing the Right Skylight

Fixed or vented. A fixed skylight brings in light only and costs the least. A vented unit opens for air, with a manual rod or a solar-powered motor and rain sensor. Bathrooms and kitchens usually want vented.

Deck mount or curb mount. A deck-mounted skylight fastens straight to the roof sheathing and sits low and flush and go in with a new roof or a full re-flash. Curb-mounted units sit on a raised wooden frame, the curb, and are the normal choice when replacing an older skylight on an existing curb.

Sizes. VELUX makes standard sizes that fit between rafters on 16 and 24 inch centers, so most installs need no structural change. Larger units and paired skylights need a header, which we frame.

We check the rafter spacing, the roof pitch and the ceiling below, and confirm the unit and size that fit.

2. Estimate

One price for the unit, flashing kit, roof work and the interior finish. No allowances and no surprises.

3. Install Day

Opening cut and framed, membrane and flashing set, skylight installed and shingles woven back in. Usually one day.

4. Warranty Registered

We register the VELUX warranty for you. If we did the roof, the GAF warranty covers the assembly too.

Where a Skylight Works Best

Half of a good skylight is picking the right spot for it. These are the three things we look at on the visit before we talk about units.

  • The Room – Kitchens, bathrooms and stairwells gain most, hallways take a sun tunnel
  • The Slope – North gives soft, even light, south and west give light and heat
  • The Roof – Pitch of 15 degrees or more, clear of valleys, hips and chimneys

Skylight FAQ

Usually the leak is at the flashing or the seal, not the glass, and on an older unit that means the skylight has reached the end of its life. We inspect it free, tell you what is actually leaking, and price a replacement with new flashing. We do not patch old skylights, because the patch fails the next winter.

Yes, almost always. A skylight is usually good for 20 to 30 years, about the same as an asphalt roof. Replacing both at once means the flashing is built into the new roof and nobody cuts into it later.

Fixed for light only, vented for air. Bathrooms, kitchens and rooms that get hot in summer want a vented unit. A solar-powered VELUX vented skylight needs no wiring and closes itself in rain.

A replacement on an existing opening is usually done in a few hours. A new skylight with a light shaft is normally one day, two if the interior finish is involved.

Not when it is installed correctly. GAF warranties require the work to be done to spec. As a GAF Certified Plus contractor we do it that way and document it, and our installs carry the VELUX warranty as well.

Yes. We inspect the roof around the opening first, because a skylight in a failing roof is money wasted, and we tell you if that is what we find.

Yes. That is what the light shaft is for: a framed, drywalled tunnel from the roof to the ceiling. Straight shafts are simplest and flared shafts spread more light.
